Our love is more than one plus one

by Ole Carsten   Feb 20, 2013

Trying to understand nature,
it is not easy to sit and think about it,
I am counting events of nature,
trying to calculate storms.
I can't divide all events in my life time,
trying to use math to help me,
even I know it doesn't work at all
the poles will melt and we will drown?

A lot of effort for a single person,
to keep up the atmosphere alone,
If I find a way to control the elements,
I let you know, all of you.
Transforming elements from typhoon,
to sunshine in a beautiful mind,
sounds like a dream for a human,
I am not sure I can calculate all that.

I start with the beginning of the beginning,
it took only seven days to build the world,
first I have to figure out what the world was then?
if it was the earth, sun, moon and stars?

I have to have more time to count all,
it is like love, how do you count love?
by the kisses and touches?
or by the thoughts of love?

I don't give up on anything,
But I can't count our love,
it is bigger than just me,
our love is more than one plus one.

This is the second time I've seen math being used as an extended metaphor in poetry this week, and I personally think it works fantastically.

I loved this stanza above all else:

I have to have more time to count all,
it is like love, how do you count love?
    by the kisses and touches?
or by the thoughts of love?

Interesting ideas posed here about the measuring and counting of love. The speaker creates a division between love's 'physical' nature as well as the mental and arguably more precious state - subconsciously adhering to the math metaphor, which is such a mature technique the poet has used successfully.

    Excellent.
