The Promise

by Isabella Grace   May 29, 2013

I made a promise,

I said goodbye,

I will never forget you,

I will not lie.

The hardest thing,

I have ever done,

Is it for the best,

Never our time in the sun.

A life I dreamed of,

Since the day I met you,

A true man,

Is gone forever,

Without a plan.

A waltz, an RV, and tacky lights,

That you hung for me,

Exactly right.

A smile and a hug,

A kiss and a goodnight.

A picnic, a kite,

A blanket under a tree,

Or in the sun,

Chicken n dumplins and cornbread,

At the table,

When they are done.

One thousand count sheets,

Our luxury,

A nap in your arms,

After a ride in the country.

Your old Ford,

Me sitting close,

The wind in my hair,

I want the most.

I'd learn about World War II,

A beautiful 1860's ball gown,

I would wear,

I would feel just as beautiful,

And you would think so too.

Our arms around each other,

How handsome you would be,

A perfect night,

Just for you and me.

So perfectly dressed,

We would waltz.

Your arms in mine,

By candlelight,

We would dine.

Four Children,

We would love.

They would be like my own,

No difference in each,

We would have shown.

So many places,

We dreamed about,

Your mom and dad,

I had planned to meet,

You said they would love me,

I'll always be sad.

Our lives have changed,

There is just one world,

Nothing I can do,

To make you love me,

As I love you.

All I need,

Is my Aveda Shampoo,

And in my life,

I have you.

Goodbye I promised,

I had no choice,

I cannot live,

And not hear your voice.

The plan of God,

From above,

For the two of us,

Was Eternal love.

You lost your vision,

The wonderful woman I can be for you,

An incredible man, you are too,

Life for the two of us,

Was God's plan,

Our future is up to you,

It is your decision.

I know what a man is,

He taught me love,

I'll never settle for less,

His plan from above.

The plan may not be,

Meant for us two,

I sure thought so,

I prayed so too.

A final goodbye,

Find your true love,

Waltz together,

A blessing from above.

Beautiful and bittersweet story... how you loved and he lost sight of what you could be together. I love how you really take it into perspective that this man taught you to love, that you'll never forget that, but you will not settle and you inspire everyone else to "find your true love". To leave it in the hands of God and move on while still holding some memories if it doesn't go as you may have wished.

Not sure you need a comma after every single line but if that is your style, run with it ... I was just thinking it breaks the poem up a bit when you still have that continued thought, but it's up to what you prefer. You still have good flow when I read it aloud I think.
