The Path

by UtterlyAlive   Dec 27, 2013

I Followed the path,
I Followed it until i was deep into the forest,
Until i was so deep and it was so dark,
That even the devil turned away in fear

I Listened to screams of the night,
I Let darkness run through my blood,
I Felt the wind bite at my soul,
Until I was as cold as the ice that was suffocating the rose between fingers

I watched as a single petal fell,
Fell From the rose that was as black as my heart,
Time seemed to speed up,
The petal fell, shriveled, crumbled, then dissolved into the wind

I felt myself getting old,
I Watched as my hair turned white,
Bent over like a hunch back,
I looked at the rose now lying upon the ground

Two petals fell,
And once again shriveled,
Just like the skin upon my fingers,
I waited as they disappeared

I could feel myself becoming weak,
I fell to the ground,
I shook and my fingers curled
I screamed in protest

I looked to see another petal fall,
And soon came the pain,
I looked back down the path,
But couldn't make my body move

I clawed at my face,
Over and over again,
In one final attempt,
To distract from all other pain

I thought I was to die but another petal fell,
A raven flew over head,
And screeched his song of horror,
I lay on the ground shaking, waiting

He pecked at my flesh,
Ate at my skin,
Left me bloody and broken,
But still very much alive

I grasped the ground,
Rocks cutting beneath my nails,
I pulled myself in an attempt to escape,
But finally, the last petal fell

I tried to crawl back down the path,
Tried to find my way back,
I wanted to escape,
But alas I was not the same

I was left broken on the ground,
The world around me silent,
But the pain within was screaming,
And I could feel my soul fading

Like the last petal I crumbled, swirled and disappeared into the wind,
Screaming as I went,
My voice was added to those previously gone,
And my soul lived on In the empty night
