The Wonders of the World

by Skyler   Jun 7, 2014

Upon a worldly trek,
I hastened to embark.
I stood upon the deck,
And sailed into the dark.

With sweat upon my brow,
I rode upon the swell,
I happened through Moscow,
And saw Kolokol's Bell.

I sailed to Andalucia.
I saw the Alhambra.
I went, then, to Korea,
And knew the Godalsa.

The world has many wonders,
Each of them, a gift,
From Heaven's mighty thunder,
To the foam upon the drift.

I knew the joy of labor,
As the sun would shine above,
And tasted many flavors,
But never tasted love.

I sought then, boyish honor,
To overcome my foes,
And there, upon the water,
I set them to repose.

For the world has many wonders,
Some of them, a curse,
And in my foolish blunder,
I carried out the worst.

And then I could see no beauty
In ev'ry place I came upon.
Guided only by my duty,
My wanderlust was gone.

And seeing earthly treasures
Did nothing to inspire
The divinity and pleasure
Of the one I now admire.

She stepped out of a daydream
My ideal, given form
With darkened hair, and skin like cream,
Beautiful and warm.

Her soul, a perfect fit to me,
So flawlessly aligned,
But where else would my soul-mate be
But the place I left behind.

The tragedy befalls me still,
For how could I have known,
That despite the world and all its thrills,
The greatest lies back home?

I pray now she'll wait patiently,
As I complete my seaward track,
And hope she'll have a place for me,
For I shall hurry, swiftly, back.
