The Road Goes Ever On and On (A reprise of Tolkien)

by Skyler   Dec 1, 2014

The following verse is J. R. R. Tolkien, renowned author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, the Silmarillion, and other works. I have recently had to part ways with someone that I love more than anything, and I was inspired to write my own continuation, in the second verse.

[The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.]

So while the road goes ever on
And I tread with weary feet
I hope that I will come upon
The place where friends and lovers meet
While far ahead our roads must go
And each of us must go our way
Part of me delights to know
Our paths could be as one some day
