The Five W's

by Maher   Jan 8, 2015

Who are you? Really, who are you?
How is it that I am bound to your presence?
I, whose friends call heartless, evil, cruel, cold, direct
and many other words that can't even be uttered by pure chance,
find myself falling into you.
The similitude of a string of my soul wrapped around your ring finger as you gently, yet firmly, nudge me closer and closer,
like the eb and flow of the oceans en-masse into a space the size of a pin head.

What is it that attracts me to you?
Is it your smile? Your eyes? Your face? Your beauty?
Your character, demeanor, intellect, kindness, mercy, calmness, patience, loyalty, compassion, sternness...
Love?
It must be the latter, that damned love!
What else could pull me so far down, and yet so high up?
At times I feel I've sunk through the other side of the earth, and at others, I've transcended it.
Her gaze asked me to figure it out, and I have.
I have.

But where can I find you?
I know where you are, but where?
It's easier to fly to the outskirts of space than it is to see you and return alone.
The kind of alone that the outskirts of such a void can't make you feel.
Empty. Hollow. Carved from sand, always crumbling.
That lump and tightness of the throat that presents itself in dire straits.
Where are you so that I can take you home and reward you for taming me?

I see now. It's not where, it's when.
When will you wrap me around that finger for good?
There is the question I neglected to ask.
I know it's not your fault, it's the fault of things around you.
You've done no wrong in this world, things around you just go wrong.
From family, to friends, to things that cannot be predicted, they all go horribly wrong.
That is why the true silent question is when - not who, what, or where.
When...if ever?

Why?
If I knew, I'd not ask.
If others knew, I would.
It's a solid impasse.
Maybe it's best not to know.
