Vessel of Love

Vessel of Love

A young child sets sail
how does this work?
stick pushes it out
parting glass ripples beneath glimmering orange orb

not satisfied
returning to the water
a teenager now on a rope raft
he sticks his vessel by his own power

"It's called a runabout," grandfather said
Putting his hand over mine
Lunging the throttle forward
The motor energized leaving wake behind

Into adulthood
that memory took him out to sea ...

What he remembered most
was the image of grandfather
steadying the boat
and holding the arm of grandmother
as he guided her with love
onto the vessel where they would spend their most cherished moments.

When grandfather passed away
a dusty old row boat was discovered
among his prized collection
attached with flathead screws
onto the stern was "Marge"

We can only imagine
What romantic cruises
that Ernie and Marge shared
in their vessel of love
crafted and made
by Ernie himself
His life's work and legacy
