My Long Distance Call

by Shelley Williams   Mar 28, 2016

Shelley sang a silly song
and shouted out with glee,
On the roof I called Christine
but she did not come to me.

In my hot pink Barbie T-Shirt
wailing with excited smile,
I gave out a louder yell
and I waited for a while.

I had planned a fun day
for me and my best friend,
I thought I'd try a yodel
but my voice just did not send.

The neighbor came a running
in shock from all the noise,
I looked at her in amazement
and dropped one of my toys.

My Barbie fell on the ground
and caused us both to shake,
I was screaming, "Barbie"
when I dropped my easy bake.

She looked up with a stare
astonished by my play,
I heard her call me stupid
as she walked the other way.

My easy bake was broken
And Barbie lay in the mud,
I was more than upset
when my bear fell with a thud.

I looked over the treetops
aware of people walking by,
On the roof outside my window
I could not help but cry.

Christine did not hear the
shout or yodel of my mouth,
I tried hard to reach her
and my beanie pointed south.

The day was at an end
and I pulled inside my toys,
In the window with a frown
after Mom said, "Stop the noise!"

She took me by the hand,
and lead me to the phone,
Mom dialed Christine's number
and then left me alone.

With a soft spoken voice
I said, " Is this Christine?"
She finally replied to me
while I sipped my ovaltine.

We spoke for half an hour
before I had to go to bed,
I was feeling a lot better
after all that she had said.

There was much to say
without shouting for miles,
I knew I had much to learn
about a phone and how it dials.

Sleep would come quickly
when I was ready to get rest,
I put my beanie on the chair
and the spinner pointed west.

In sleep I was a dreaming
of a play date with my friend,
But, New York is much farther
than where the sidewalk end.
