Magic

by Dylan Ruelle   Jun 18, 2016

The voices in my head,
They speck to me instead,
Instead of them,
Instead of the people who think,
Who think they have it bad,
But they are skinny, pretty, tall like a picture perfect barbie doll,
While they go ahead and think life is so terrible for them,
Some of us are laying six feet deep,
And other are trapped,
Trapped under the concrete of suicidal thought,
And then theres people like me,
We perform,
We perform to amuse others,
We perform a magic act,
That only a few can't perfect,
And that magic trick is the act of the smile,
To pretend we are happy to smile,
Because we,
Magicians show,
Not tell.

Dylan, what a wonderful write-like Em said, very relatable to a lot of people. To put a smile on our face and head out the door sometimes requires superhuman effort on our part. You did a wonderful job putting that into words. Don't stress about those "Barbie dolls", they are a lot more insecure and frail than you will ever be-it takes a lot more just to survive. Looking forward to more writes from you-

Dylan, firstly, I'd like to welcome you to P&Q and what a great piece this is; very powerful and relatable to many people. I also, feel it's very personal to you.

    The voices in my head,
    They speck to me instead,
    ^^
A very powerful opening and when we get these 'voices' in our heads they are usually bad ones.. Typo on 'speck' it should be 'speak'

    Instead of them,
Instead of the people who think,
Who think they have it bad,
    ^^
This reminds me of a saying my mum used to say "no matter how bad things get remember, there is always someone worse off than yourself."

But they are skinny, pretty, tall like a picture perfect barbie doll,
    ^^
They may be skinny, pretty and 'picture perfect' but trust me they will probably Ave nothing on others be wise these people are usually the more horrible of people inside.

While they go ahead and think life is so terrible for them,
Some of us are laying six feet deep,
    And other are trapped,
Trapped under the concrete of suicidal thought,
    ^^
Suicidal thoughts take over a lot of peoples minds and usually they are the best people because they get hurt the most.

And then theres people like me,
    We perform,
    We perform to amuse others,
    ^^
This made me think of performing like acting out, making people believe we are ok m, when we aren't.

    We perform a magic act,
That only a few can't perfect,
And that magic trick is the act of the smile,
To pretend we are happy to smile,
    Because we,
    Magicians show,
    Not tell.
    ^^
Perfectly sad ending and one which many people (incl me) can relate to. Painting on a smile to hide behind every morning is a magic trick not to take lightly.

    Loved this, Em
