The Powerhouse on the Playing Field

by Cecelia Bushway   Jul 18, 2016

A gun goes off-
A family torn apart-
We fly our flags half mast-
We say a prayer.

A bomb explodes-
And the children are scarred-
We fly our flags half mast-
We offer our condolences.

A club gets shot up-
A gun legally obtained-
We fly our flags half mast-
Our esteemed leader makes a speech.

Skin color, violence and death once again intertwine-
Not once-Not twice-but too many times-
We fly our flags half mast-
We light a candle.

A truck plows down and a man shoots up a crowd-
On a day of freedom and national pride-
We fly our flags half mast-
And L.E.D. a building, red, white, and blue.

A foreign government nearly falls to shambles-
Death lingers still in the streets-
We fly our flags half mast-
And are ready to pull our men out.
