Sounds like a mother who has lost her child and keeping herself alive with books of colors or it could be someone going through a broken marriage but still keeps going with her job, her pastime her get away from reality. Or my interpretation is all wrong. Nonetheless, I like the scene you have penned with simple words.

This could mean anything!!! But for me I could see it’s like a loved one is fighting depression trying to fight the darkness with colors. And the narrator (you) are being there for them, making them realize that.
