A Death’s lament in war

by Obscure   Feb 6, 2024

Where have the spirits gone?
I held them in my hands
Their little bodies writhing
As they clung to time’s thin sand

Why can’t I follow with them?
On that journey with no end
I wish to guide them onward
Since they haven’t got a friend

Why are they all so lonely?
Though they leave us in such droves
Is there no-one left to love them
Or to wonder where they go?

Those eyes that never opened
Yet see how they search for light
Though they’re forever trapped in souls
That never can have sight

The bodies that once held them
Strewn all over streets and stones
See how war’s most holy sacrifices
Never make it home

(I got the idea for the first line from Satish Verma's poem titled "Where Do The Sprits Go?")
