The beast in my head

by Mark Hopwood   Jun 8, 2025

There is a beast that lies within
Destroying all in it's path,
Sabotaging the gentle truth
Then does it sit back and just have a laugh?
At the carnage that it leaves
The damage that is done
Destroying happiness is it's aim
Causing misery, is its idea of fun?

Because nothing about this is funny
These tears I cry aren't of joy
These thoughts and feelings won't leave me be
It's like they seek out to seek and destroy
It wreaks havoc upon you,
It wreaks it's havoc upon me too
Ruining all that is good
Turning the sun to black and to blue

And it breaks through and it breaks you
And it breaks me,
I hold my head in my hands
It breaks you when it breaks through
And it breaks me too,
Grasping my head in my hands
Why am i cradling my enemy like a friend?

The mind, a damaged source of pain
Warped with true and untrue
When the difference between both is lost
That's when this beast breaks through.
