Box that is Black [1993]

by Aaron J. Louie

this is an amazing poem !!!!!! read it and think thats what i did . . . .

and again we come to that same old place
pour out our souls,
promising we won't do it again
yet it remains
a dull ache in that part of us
we cannot soothe
with aspirin or alcohol or ignorance
it repeats, cycles,
running that dirge over and over
in our heads it beats
against our skulls, scrapes
its raw fingertips
across the little black box
we hide it in, buried
in the bowels of our dream

no matter how deep
or dark or horrible or seemingly
bottomless our pit,
it stays there in that shrine
of guilt, cathedral
of pain cowering in darkness
and again we come to that same old place
and promise
we won't do it again
