If Life Had Only Been Different

by Kevin   Nov 30, 2004

Laying here upon my bed,
I flip through the pages of the books I’ve read,
And I wonder what I could have said,
If life had only been different…

As I feel the hard mattress beneath my spine,
I remember the time I was eight or nine,
And how my father loved his wine,
If life had only been different…

Listening to the songs of the birds in the trees,
Wishing I could feel that gentle breeze,
I wonder if someone can hear my pleas,
If life could only be different…

Gazing through a window of unforgiving steel,
Feeling the sickness from my freezing cold meal,
What would have happened had I not made that deal?
If life had only been different…

Closing my eyes I sigh in thought,
Pondering on all the things I was taught,
And maybe, perhaps I would not have been caught,
If life had only been different…

As the clock of Death begins to tick,
I reach out for my walking stick,
And I rise from the bed on legs of brick,
If life could only be different…

As my feet embrace the icy tile,
They lead me along the dreaded last mile,
What would have happened had I not gone to trial?
If life had only been different…

The light goes out and it’s hard to see,
The ghostly faces that stare back at me,
And I feel the straps across my knees,
If life could only be different…

As the hole in my arm throbs and aches,
My head tilts back and my hands start to shake.
And I fall into a sleep, never to wake.
If life… had only been different.

This is another one I wrote in college. Slightly depressing I know. I think I might write a love poem
for a change, that's something I've never tried before. Anyway please comment if possible, and thanks for reading...
