Love, Hate, Lifetime and Eternity

by Atahan Tolunay   Dec 14, 2004

A reluctant smile was all I offered as a goodbye
It saddens me today alas it was our last moment
Even though my hatred for her I could not deny
I should have cherished that transient moment

One does never know when the strife within ends
Who is to say that anger is an emotion so eternal
In many ways that feeling at some point transcends
To something mild and not so quite infernal

Somehow I always find my self in this predicament
Never knowing what I want or what I feel inside
This perpetual problem is everyone’s eternal torment
But no one chooses to do anything; we all abide

I wish I had been stronger in that moment of goodbye
Alas I did not do so and now I live on without serenity
After all these years there is one thing I can’t deny:
I hate you for a lifetime but I will love you for all eternity.

That was a beautifully written poem, Atahan. I loved the precise language you used to define emotions that are not easily described but often felt after the curtain has closed on a past relationship.

Your poem also contains a very appealing rhyme and rhythmic flow. Truthfully, I come across very few poems of this caliber. This is one that I will surely re-read more than once.
