Way Up Here

I was ten years old,
Learning never to drink or do drugs
Getting high, was not for pride
I tell you, I thought I wouldn't
I knew it couldn't happen, it shouldn't
You can decide this now!
The counselor said
I knew if I did, it would make me dead
My mom told me everyday, my medicine was so strong,
If I mixed it with alcohol it would do me wrong
Then if I smoked a little pot it would get me high alright, high so high, up in the sky
So here I am, way up here
Looking at you, way down there
Mom, you told me everything I did was wasn't right
If I said a word back, I'd pick a fight
I was finally ungrounded; you let me go to a party
I said to my friends, this is my last night with you guys, don't make me tardy
I've got somewhere to go, just after I fall asleep
I'd be gone forever, my soul you can keep
They didn't get what I was saying, though so we went
I partied hard, and didn't smoke till I was the last one left
They passed it to me, I took it and dragged
Then I went and got a drink, and thought I'd play tag
Catch me if you can, last few moments with me
I'm going to sleep soon then I have to leave
People didn't get it but they hugged me goodbye
So I fell asleep and never asked myself why
It was a long journey to get to the top,
I looked through my past my future, no stops
Then I met God waiting for patiently
And I asked God why'd you let me stay if this was done by me?
He said “I know dear, but you stayed faithful and asked for forgiveness
So I am accepting you to my home
Completely regretless”
So here I am, way up here
Looking at you, way down there
If you keep faith, you'll make it to heaven
Don't cut life short, there's more than cloud seven
Things do get better you'll make it through
