And I Wait,

by nikki @~~   Jan 28, 2005

I sit and I wait, and I hope and I dream
and I twiddle my thumbs, and I look, and I turn
and he’s there, and I’m worried, and I’m shy, and I want
but I can’t and I don’t and I won’t, so I put my head down and I wait

and I wait, and I look, and he turns, and he walks
and I wait, and I look, and he sits, and I’m seen
and I’m shy, but I’m willing, but oh how do I start
what to say, where to look, oh god why now?
and I smile, and he smiles,
and my heart bursts somehow
and I wait, and he looks, and he offers a start
and my heart, I can hear it, Oh god, can he hear my heart?

and I say something, anything, to drown out the noise
and I’m sure he can hear it, I know it, and I’m poised,
for flight, but then he smiles,
and I sit, and I wait, and I hope and I dream
and I stare, and I’m shy, and I glance away, and I worry
but he smiles, and he says something, and he’s not walking away
so I say something back,
anything to make him stay
and he laughs, and I’m lightened
and my world takes a dive,
can I do this, will I make it? Am I actually alive?
and he smiles, and I know,
and I smile right on back,
‘cuz I don’t need to say it, he sees it, and that
is all that I needed, that smile, that time
to sit and to wait, and to know he was mine.
