River

by Aymon F   Feb 14, 2005

I'm alone amidst crowds of people
I hear silence yet I see
There should be

Noises
Voices
Laughter
but no

I'm the ice in the river flow
Still watching the world go
The broken string on a guitar
The dead star that seems to be shining
The tree that lost its leaves but
come spring, couldn’t grow them back
That grains of sand the water throws
one way and another

The baby bird that fell out of the nest
The empty house down the street
with boarded windows and graffitied doors
The escalator collecting dust, jealous of the stairs
Broken pieces of a bottle shattered on the sidewalk
And the blood trickling from the child's foot
I'm the crack in the window, and the rock that broke it.
I'm the faded doormat
I'm everywhere you never are
and part of your life's plot.
Oblivious the river is to the ice,
the stars still seem to shine
Many more of them in the sky to
fill the space that no one
knows is missing.
I am loneliness.
