It was all he could do to not break down there
His fellow Marines watching him reading his mail
It was from his fiance who was waiting for him in Ohio
The letter said what every Marine fears
That when he comes home she would not be there
The lonely nights were to much to stand
So she went out and found another man
The Marine walked off, he had to be alone
He cried under a tree as he looked at her picture
His motivation for survival was he would soon be with her
He almost took his rifle and ended it there
But to his fallen friends, that would not be fair
So he put the picture inside his cover
Put the letter in his pocket next to his heart
And went to the field
Another round of the war had started
He took his anger out on the enemy
Like a war machine he killed everything
When it was all over and was time to go home
It was exactly two years since he found out he would be alone
He was welcomed back to town, the hero they wanted to see
But there was only one place he needed to be
Letter in hand he walked to the door
He could see in the window a kid playing on the floor
She opened the door, her glass left her hand
As she stared straight ahead to who used to be her man
But what he saw in her wasn't what he saw in his picture
He could tell her new man liked to hit her
The Marine for a moment wasn't angry at her
But at the man who didn't give her what she deserved
The two stared while tears ran down their cheeks
The Marine felt the adrenaline rush from his hands to his feet
As the new man walked up with a beer in his hand
He told the Marine to get off his land
With fire in his eyes and a rekindled flame in his heart
He told his girl to get the kid and go to the car
The new man grabbed her by the hair and said don't u dare
The Marine hit him once and he fell down the porch stairs
He jumped onto him and all his anger came raging through
He left the mans face scarred with an imprint of his boot
And the ride back to town was quiet
Till they got to their home
And their eyes met again
They new they were meant to be
And they would live happily ever after
