For My Friend

I can't believe I never knew
How so alike we are,
I thought that our relationship
Had not yet come that far.

The thought never occurred to me
It never crossed my mind,
That another soul like this
I could ever find.

The thoughts we have are quite the same
Yet we act so differently,
The motives behind the things you do
Are now so clear for me to see.

I have a deep appreciation now
But a deeper love for you,
And a deep respect too
For the things that you go through.

The fact that you sincerely care
Really means a lot,
You tell me that I'm something great
Which others just have not.

So wherever we both end up
No matter where we go,
I used to feel so alone
And I just want you to know.

You've touched my life in such a way
I never thought could be,

And the love you showed to me.

I wrote this for my friend Dawson, who I've noticed day after day is more like me than I had thought. In a world full of pretenders he's been a rock that hasn't moved and I really do appreciate that. So Dawson, thank you!
