Silence

by Emma Carnage   Mar 26, 2005

I try for silence
Escape the music
Away from the talk
Outside
Alone in the dark
Shivering with no coat
I’m amazed by the quiet
Haven’t heard it for years
Only my pencil scratching
Then I wait
And I wait
Minutes pass by
I stop writing
No more scratching
I begin to hear it
The hum
I hear the machines
Heaters running
Cars driving
Hum of silence
My ears have weakened
I’ve grown used to the noise
Incessant hums
Never ceasing
I escaped the music
The noise of talking
Looked for silence
I stopped my search
Thought I found it
But it turns out
There is no silence
No such thing
As silence
Any more
