It Was Only A Dream

by Lyndsay   Apr 2, 2005

I feel your eyes upon me as you’re crouching there behind
Motionless, I concentrate on the task in hand
Until I can resist no longer
Oblivious to the world around I lie back
And rest my head on your outstretched thighs
Your fingers run through my hair
Slowly sending me into a dreamy sleep
Yet I’m still awake
Still gazing up at your face
Into your eyes
As you gaze back down at me
Conversation around us dies
The sounds of today somehow become lost
As your arms slip around my waist
And gently, ever so gently
Guide me back so I can lean against you
I can feel your breath on my skin
Your sweet aroma as you nestle your nose into my neck
Whispering those hypnotic words into my ear
I love you
We’re lying back now
My head resting on your stomach
The faint trace of a heartbeat just perceptible
And you’re holding my hand
Then, later, when I think you’ve gone
I sense this hand encircling my waist once more
And a head appears over my shoulder
And a smooth cheek touches mine
Yours
And I reach up and place my hand on your other cheek
Holding you so close to me
And I tilt my head and gaze once more into your eyes
And then it fades
And reality sets in
And I wake up with my head on the pillow
Alone
With the pillow moist from the tears flooding from my eyes
I slowly heave myself out of bed and splash my eyes
My mother, concerned, asks me what is wrong
I don’t tell her; ‘an eyelash’ I say
This is my secret but I confide in a friend
I was crying over you in my sleep
For a moment I was yours
But it wasn’t meant to be
It is never meant to be
It was only a dream
