Narcissism (to my dad)

by No Motiv?   Apr 2, 2005

Narcissism (noun)
1. Excessive love or admiration of oneself. See Synonyms at conceit.
2. A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.
------
16 years I've lived
No father by my side
A man who fails to love
Keeps my pain alive

They call it narcissism
A disorder that lacks empathy
No matter how successful,
He would never be proud of me

Nor could he love
His wife or only daughter
His child tried to provoke love
But the father only fought her

Professionals, they like to say
The father isn't to blame
If confronted about the issue,
He would surely feel no shame

Narcissism enables indifference
Toward those one should care for
To exercise affection-
Would really make him sore

So today I can only live
With no father to hold my hand
There are no footsteps to be followed
Nothing remains in the quicksand

And this is all because
His parents were just the same
They were both narcissistic
Causing him a deeper pain

Accomplishments would go unnoticed
And the boy would surely suffer
Growing up neglected
He thought the pain made him tougher

His feelings were kept secret
As a true man would never cry
So he became his own perfect image
And about this he was not shy

Others were made to notice him
And become engulfed by his majesty
He thought he was superior
All that anyone could hope to be

His false image made him happy
Because his pain was thrown away
But the boy that really suffers
Tries to relive his everyday

He knows his parents love him not,
His motivation to succeed
He binds himself to misery
Unable to be freed.

I don't think the rhyme really does the poem justice, it seems almost too fluid and not as emotional as it could be.

    But it's still really good.
