Lost in the Past

by Lisa D Larson   May 19, 2005

A man lost in his past
Sits alone by a dying fire
Caught up in memories
Of the woman he still loves
As he watches the flames
Popping and dancing in the night
He is taken back to her
The scent of lilac on the breeze
The warmth of the sun
Kissing on their skin
When he closes his eyes
He can picture her face
Smiling back at him
With love in her gaze
He can feel the silk
Of her hair on his finger tips
Her glowing skin
Soft under his touch
He can hear her laughter
As he tickles her side
He remembers the lazy days
They shared with joy
Long before the cancer
Took its deathly hold
He skips to another night
When she lies asleep in bed
And the only sound heard
Is the hum of the machines
And the slow rhythmic beep
Of her heart monitor
The tubes seem to be growing
Out of her motionless body
Like serpents over taking a corpse
He never left her side
In her moments of need
As the days slowly passed
His heart kept breaking
And hope seemed to slowly fade
Like her fragile body
He longed to go back in time
To when he used to hold her
He closes his eyes
And she is before him
He reaches out to her
But just keeps reaching on
The chill of the night
Brings him back
To his empty life
With out her here.
