You've All Gone Away

by lindzy   Aug 5, 2005

With nothing to say
My heart is left still
Since you've all gone away

Everyday is now grey
And I always feel ill
With nothing to say

I have no desire to play
My spirit's caught a chill
Since you've all gone away

I was crying today
Shrieking and shrill
With nothing to say

I am no longer gay
And i haven't a thrill
Since you've all gone away

No one could stay
My spirits caught a chill
And I've nothing to say
Since you've all gone away

This was true to the form of a villanelle, but not necessarily to the finer points of writing them. Villanelles, though repetitive, follow the same essential construct as a story. There should be a turning point/climax around the 3rd or 4th stanza, where either your meaning shifts or some sort of conclusion is brought about. You have certainly shown that you are more than able to handle this difficult form of poetry, but you should also try to refine your capacity to control the meaning of your well-wrought words.
