Mirror

by Jessica M Lippy   Aug 21, 2005

I looked into the mirror today,
But I didn't like what I had seen,
Because I couldn't recognize,
The girl staring back at me,
Her smile was to forced,
Her eyes had lost their shine,
There were no tears on her cheeks,
But yet those tears were mine,
She has the soul of an artist,
Painting her own fantasies,
And laughs way too much,
To cover her small pleas,
She goes to sleep every night,
Her dreams are laced with fear,
And wakes up with short relief,
That fades when dawn is near,
She puts on her fake smile,
To walk out through the door,
Just to feel the emptiness,
And get hurt even more,
She listens to their every word,
Trying so hard not to cry,
So she turns her back to them,
Wondering if she should die,
Then she comes back home,
Trying to ignore the pain,
But she just can't help wondering,
Is she living this life in vain,
I looked into my reflection last night,
And somehow I have changed,
My eyes have a blinding light,
My life has been rearranged,
Where vultures once cawed,
Songbirds now sing,
But every once and a while,
When things are trifling
I look into the mirror,
To see if she is me,
And She is part of everything
From the mountains to the sea.
