Almost

by des   Sep 23, 2005

Almost

I almost had your face on my pillow,

I almost had your heart.

Almost took its toll on me,

Almost was ripping me apart.

Almost had our picture in a frame

For on our shelves to mount

But everybody knows-

"Almost" doesn't count......

Almost took me by the hand,

And almost took yours, too.

Almost had a "you and me" in mind,

"We" almost came true.

And everybody knows that almost never promises

For it is only all it seems.

Like those movies they shoot in Hollywood-

They only show you everything they want you to see.

I saw you waiting there....

I followed "almost" into a dream.

And it was "almost" that kept me hanging on,

To leave me hanging in the in-between.

Almost had its grip on you;

You almost broke up with her...

You came to me like you always said you would,

But that was just a blur.

Cuz she came back to you, and you couldn't tell her "no."

So you took her back, and no longer did "almost" show.

I guess some things don't matter though...

With "us," there'd be no screams or shouts.

There'd had been more than sweet-nothings,

But "almost" had its doubts.

Almost doesn't count......

This, I'd always known.

And I knew "almost" could leave you cold at night,

Now through my sadness, this shows.

Now everytime I look at you,

I wonder how "we" could've been....

If "almost" hadn't given "us" so much hope?..

If you'd stayed just a friend.

But "almost" took me-it held me tight,

And "almost" allowed "us" to touch.

I'd known forever that "almost" could hurt,

Oh God, it hurts so much..

"Almost" kept its grip on me

And "almost" made me smile....

"Almost" loved me tender like you did,

But for just a little while.

Then, "almost" left me out in the cold,

Feeling, not stupid, but more a fool....

To almost think it could possibly be-

Almost a "me and you."

Now, all that remains? Just me, and just you,

And all things in fate had been done.

Almost has faded, and so have you...

Now, we can both move on.

It is very sad though and very strong poem that the reader can actually feel the loneliness between the lines. well I guess you are a new writer here in poems-and-quotes coz i just saw a few of your work. I hope you'll keep writing more so that i can see you around. anyway tnx for leaving a comment on my work titled "sunset". later!
