Ice

by Matt   Sep 26, 2005

Full moon and the winds blow gently
The sky is clear and filled with stars
He walks up from the dunes to the water
Stopping right where the waves crash
His sneakers drag slowly in the icy water
Jeans legs freezing as he continues on
The waves are tossing him as they wish
He keeps walking, fingers shivering
The freeze has past his waist, over his belt
Blue lips and tear-filled eyes running
Currents ripping at his feet as he walks
Lost his sneakers to the King of Tides
He keeps walking toward the horizon
Chest high water doesn't hinder him
Whispering his forgiveness to her
She didn't know what she did to him
Still walking, the water closes over
Freezing water running into his mouth
Down into his lungs, suffocating him
He won't even try to fight it
Opens his eyes, nothing but the dark now
One last goodbye, sung to the crashing waves
Maybe it'll reach her one day
To chill her spine and freeze her heart
Lock her veins stagnant from disuse
A heart that never beats, can never love.
