February Toil (subliminal message)

by Daniel J   Oct 14, 2005

In the winter nights gone by,
I lay upon the whitened ground,
To observe the blackened sky,
All voices quiet, there's not a sound.
I lie entrenched upon the earth,
Allow yonder snow upon me fall,
Recall once more memories past,
Written up in stars so small,
Upon a sea so very vast;
Then write our moments up there too,
To then recall in later days,
All the things we've done,
And marvel at the misty haze,
All the time the moon's ablaze.

Like "A moment of Love" this is another poem about someone I recently met, liked very much very quickly (she was a kindred soul, what can I say), and couldn't ever be with - due to socio-religious reasons. Actually. Just socio reasons.

This poem contains a secret message in it. If you take the first letter of the first line, second letter of the second line, etc. all the way through until and exclusing the line "To then recall..." you will get the message "I love you so."

From the words "To then recall...." to the end of the poem, contains the name of this girl. It follows different rules to any poem I've ever written, and usually I wouldn't tell anyone how to decipher this last part...

And today is no different. Meh heh heh. Sorry. No can do. The last part is mine only.
----
Explanation:
This poem purposefully goes on about myself: lying on a street in winter, allowing snow to fall on me, just looking at the stars (yes, i've done this).

The name is therefore "February Toil" - an irony that no one's actually toiling, but instead, is just lazing about one February night.

The reason why this subject was chosen, was because it was innocent, love-free, and cosy. One would never suspect a love message to be hidden inside it. Which also means if I chose to gave it to said girl (which I won't, as it would be akin to suicide [I now know through experience]) then prying eyes would never ever know about the actual meaning of the poem.

Of course, the reader never suspected that the title February Toil actually stands for:
For The One I Love (F. TOIL) which is the primary reason why that title was chosen.

Of course, the part about two people being there, contain her name, signfying herself, and myself. Together. I wish. Sadly, not to be. *sigh.*

Truly a beautiful poem Daniel. Even more so once you read it the second time, knowing about the hidden message (well, part of it).
I did wonder about the title at first, but now it makes perfect sense, of course. Yet another secret message worked into the poem. I don't imagine it's an easy thing to do.
Great job, glad to see some more work from you.
