Ambidextrous Poet-The Promise

by Truest Lies   Oct 30, 2005

*This is a companion piece to Ambidextrous Poet, which people complained was a bit too dark. Im sorry its so long.

Ambidextrous poet,
Lies in a white hospital bed,
His wrists tightly bandages,
In the places they had bled.

The nurses could not wrap his heart,
Though,
And he imagines it still bleeding,
Broken in too many places...
As the tears fall they leave watery traces,
Down his face.

On the wall he sees pinned,
Two poems,
One about love,
One about heartbreak,
And he tries to decide,
Which he should finish,
Which he should discard.

The nurse arrives with a tray,
And, at his order,
Two forks,
So he can eat with both hands,
Dessert and dinner at the same time,
Something useful for the ambidextrous poet to do,
As he tries to imagine,
What poem he should write,
And what ending it would have.

His eyes light up,
As he sees,
The nurse in her haste,
Left a sharp knife on the tray.

"Let us end this once and for all,"
he says,
Referring to the torn,
Tattered poem,
Pinned to the wall.
Then he catches sight of the love poem,
And where it ended abruptly on the single word 'Unconditionally.'

It is there that he realizes,
What she did was wrong,
But he made a mistake himself,
Perhaps there was hope,
If he finished the love poem and gave it to her,
Would she take him back?
Or would she look at him,
As she had before,
With that glitter of hate?

He had to try,
And give himself hope,
For her sake as well as his,
For good times sake,
For the love they used to have.

Taking a deep breath,
He put down the knife,
And got up,
Walking over to the love poem,
He watched as the sun glistened off of the paper,
And noticed for the first time,
A strange blotch,
Smudging the ink.
Could that be?
Who would have imagined,
A tear of happiness,
Running through his lines of love poetry.

He saw in those words,
The promise of a brighter future,
And as he plucked the page down,
To begin writing again,
He swore what would be a future with her,
As husband or friend,
No matter,
He promised himself that he would have a life with her.
