I'll remember you!

(To the brave people who won the war, and to some who died trying).

We are such good friends.
We do everything together,
But not all the time.
We joined the war,
We thought it would be fun,
But our thoughts betrayed us.
Everything was all so wrong.
Dead body after dead body,
Coming in on stretchers.
Some people we knew from around where we lived.
There was one stretcher left,
But nobody to carry it,
And nobody was on it.
We both stared at it for a long time,
And then we looked at each other in fear.
We both hoped we wouldn't end up on that.
Suddenly, the Sargent yelled to us.
"You two!" He yelled.
We stood up straight ready to take orders.
"There a man down on the field," He yelled.
I was scared.
I knew what he was going to say next.
"Take that stretcher over there and go get him!"
He said as he pointed at the stretcher we were staring at.
We looked at each other.
We hoped we weren't going to die while getting him.
We grabbed the stretcher,
And ran out to the wounded soldier.
A bomb set off here and there,
We quickly dodged them.
We ducked down low,
And took a little rest.
Then we ran out,
And found the soldier.
I took him by his legs.
You took him by his arms.
We put him on the stretcher and ran back.
We were half way there,
When suddenly,
A bomb went off beside you.
You lost part of your body.
From your upper waste and down.
And half your arm.
I quickly dragged the soldier back,
And ran back to you.
I didn't know what to do.
You were bleeding to death,
And I was just standing there,
Staring at you.
I tried to put you on the stretcher.
Your blood went everywhere.
The Sargent yelled to me and told me to let you go.
There was nothing we could do,
You were almost dead.
I stand there staring at you,
Suffering in pain.
A tear fell from my eye,
As i saw you take your last breath.
I turned away,
Then looked back and saw you dead.
I couldn't believe it.
You were gone.
Now i sit here at home,
Remembering that day.
Everything after that wasn't the same.
But I remembered you,
And I always will.
Hopefully you're waiting for me,
My friend.
