World War 2: A Soldier's Tale Pt 1.

by Hades   Nov 30, 2005

The boat hatch lowered slowly
And I fell down to the sand,
My stomach finally settled
As I lied on steady land.

And then the sound of gunfire,
The noise, it shook my head
I turned to face the ocean,
The water turning red.

Molten metal burned my face
As mortar hit the beach
There was no safety, no salvation
All these were out of reach.

Very few had reached the shores
Or made it from their ships
They fell down dead, trying to flee
Blood trickled from their lips.

What little strength was left in me
I willed into my feet,
I sprinted towards the large, stone wall
And rejoined my withering fleet.

The captain ordered us inside
To counter their attack,
Ten other men came with me,
Two of us made it back.

Our bodies bruised and broken
But our mission a success
We came back to the rendezvous
To find a bloody mess.

A massacre had taken place,
Our squad had been destroyed.
A different corps would take us in
And again we were deployed.

The squad charged in to take control
All men who stood were shot,
I watched them die by my own hand
And left them there to rot.

We advanced toward the cities
Our uniforms stained red,
I looked at men around me
Seconds later, they were dead.

We gathered near a crumbling wall
And aimed towards the sky,
No shots were fired for quite some time,
Anxiety was high.

We had to move, our time was short
More foes would soon be here.
Our squad pressed on, no shots were fired
Our hearts were filled with fear.

And then the guns began to fire
And men began to fall
Our friends and foes, we both were struck
As death came in to call.

Our squad was down to seven men,
But we pressed farther still
Two men died from exhaustion
They didn't have the will.

Five men were left in our brave group
By night, we lost one more
Our squad had gone from twenty-two
To a battle-weary four.

By dawn we got the call we wanted
More men were sent to fight
By the next day, we had more troops
Our future was looking bright.
