The Cancer Came Back

by Courtie   Dec 18, 2005

This poem is dedicated to Kayla Marie Staples. My best friend. Kay was diagnosed with cancer in June 2004. Her only goal was to live to see her fifteenth birthday. She made it, and two extra days. Kayla's memory will live on in my heart forever. I love you Kay Bay, rest in peace

((I know this isn't very good, but I tried.))

The doctor said, "The cell count is not right, I'm sorry."
He told her not to worry; there were things she could try
Medication, radiation, chemotherapy
But there was always a chance she could live in the sky

Seven long months later, after treatments were all done
The doctor called to tell her
The cancer was gone for good.
She would get to live, like we all knew she would

Too bad God played a prank
That wasn't very funny...

The cancer came back to stay
Only two short weeks after being away
God must have needed her, more than he thought I did.
But he was wrong, she was the one who taught me how to live

Fifteen years, plus two days was her age
Yet for the last 15 months, she was locked in a cage.
A cage of anger, a cage of hurt, a cage of pain;
She never took for granted a single drop of rain.

Like a caterpillar into a butterfly she changed
We sat and watched her go from bad to worse
She cried no tears, but she had her fears.
She was scared to leave behind the ones she held near.

The cancer came back to stay, on that cold September day
This time it took my best friend, my hero, and my angel
Off into that beautiful sunset
To Heaven far, far away.
