A Hidden Truth

by Molly May   Mar 6, 2006

They said it would be
Easy
The path is marked
Clearly
Innocently I believed their
Deceitful words as they
Rolled off the tongues

I started my journey with
One careful step at a time
Stepping upon the fallen
Covered path
Worn from use
Lacking a welcoming nature
Though finding only as I enter
Darkness swallowing me whole
Hiding my entrance and to be
Exit

As the light faded from my eyes
The evil of the night
Grew
Time seemed to freeze
The sight before me
Swirling into a
Tormenting
Ruthless
Dream

The leaves stir
Not but two arms length from me
I begin to dread the fate that has been
Chosen to become
My own

Tears of fear
Streaming down
Melting my sodden
Face
Running with a racing heart
From something
Unknown to man-kind
I hear it's harsh claws
On the hardened earth
Thundering after me and
Not in play

As I decipher where to
Run
I find every tree is looking
As the one before it
My legs grown weary
My head pounding with panic

I feel dizzy and I
Stumble as I feel something
Sharp
Trapped
Pain in front with
Death closing in
Taking my only option I start to pull away the
Thorns and vines

Seeing a faint light
Growing ahead with
Darkness growing behind
I plunge in
Ignoring the splintering
Pain

Reaching the light
I find it is a circular
Clearing
With an opening in the trees above
Light spilling in
As if I had found the very gates
To Heaven
A halo of white lilies lined the clearing
With a small read patch of
Carnations marking the
Center point

The rumbling commotion behind me
Ceased in their tracks

A sense of peace
Of a quiet calming beauty
Filled the stilled air

But soon did it end
The creature started again
And was rushing towards me
With full speed
I begin to run but
Stumble on the roots of the
Over grow trees

I close my eyes
Preparing to ascend to the light
Above me
I let out a fearful blood curdling
Scream
Death is nearly upon me

I quiet myself after a few moments
Though my eyes still tightly
Shut
All grows quiet
Except for the soft chirping of a
Songbird
I slowly open one eye
Then the other

The forest had vanished
No carnivorous monster
No clearing
No trees
No fear

But the flowers
The sense of peace
The quiet calming beauty
Remained

A field
Stretching as far left and
As far right as the
Bare eye can see
Luscious green grass and the
Unfailing beauty of the wildflowers
Grew all around
Perfect white clouds decorated the
Pure blue sky as
Birds danced their graceful dances
Through them

I lay on a checkered blanket
The wind twirling about
Gently playing with my hair
A voice called my name
I turned and saw Him

Fear and confusion must have filled
My tired eyes
For when He came upon me
He said nothing but
Embraced me in His
Warm
Loving arms

A dream
But when had it begun?
All had seemed real at the time
But then the answer
Flashed before me
Though I had known it all along

The fear
The pain
The creature
The emotional drain
All was real
All had happened
But not meaning all today

Everyone believes they are
Living a dream
When all is in full reality
Even the simplest stories
Hold the truth

All Happily Ever Afters begin with
Once Upon a Dream
