My Hero

by nikki   Apr 11, 2006

Somewhere between Cristina and Oprah is where I live
Torn between Sabado Gigante and Wild N Out lies me
Not African- American enough to be black
Not Hispanic enough to Latin
See, I know nothing about Cheve Guerrera or Malcolm X
Except that they should both be my hero
But neither fought for me
Che fought for browns
And Malcolm X, for blacks
So who fought for me,
Where does that leave me?
I enjoy chicken, greens and macaroni and cheese
But I love arroz con pollo, tamales, y frijoles negros
I answer to mija, and baby girl
Shorty, and Que linda
But I\'d rather just be called Nikki
Because that\'s who I am
The hero-less brown-black girl
There\'s nothing in the history books about me,
So I\'ll write a new one
We have no Dr. King
We have no Selena
So what do we do
We stand upon our own hearts
Our own defenses, dreams, and aspirations
Who wipes our tears at night?
Our silent heroes
Our mothers who deal with the prejudice
Our fathers who fight all oppressors
We are there for each other
Because we are all we have
So who is my hero?
..........
I AM!!!!
