The Letter

by Liz   Apr 26, 2006

They met at a park bench.
They had been friends for years.
She gave him a hug.
She closed her eyes in his embrace.
She wanted to remember this moment forever.
This was the last hug that she would give him before she changed in his eyes.
She pulled out the letter and handed it to him.
She said, "Please read carefully and respond if you're able."
She said goodbye and got into her truck.
He watched her drive away.
He opened the letter, not knowing quite what to expect.
But that was how it always was with her...unpredictable.
He had become the only constant in her life.
And in a matter of minutes, it could all change.
He opened the letter and read the first line...
I never expected to find the love of my life.
For me he came as a friend.
Not knowing what to think he read on.
In the beginning I never thought of him as a blessing, but he was a savior of the sort...
When I thought I might fall, he kept me grounded.
When I wanted to spread my wings, he was ready to fly.
He had a shoulder to cry on, and endless stories to make me smile.
It's not how I thought it would happen.
It was not in my plans.
The day I realized that I'd fallen in love with my best friend.
He looked up from the letter with tears in his eyes.
She had written what he had felt for years.
Why now, of all times, had his prayers been answered?
The letter continued:
When I found out about you and her, I tried to close your chapter of my life.
You are happy.
But it has been written, and unable to be erased.
Although selfish, I know I must tell you how I really feel.
I love you for all of your strengths and for all your weaknesses.
I see a perfect me in your eyes.
I love you more than I'll probably ever understand.
No matter what you decide, the next step is yours.
He folded the letter and put it in his pocket.
He sat at the park bench recounting the memories they had made over the years...
Back at her apartment, she waited as an hour passed and than another one.
She knew it was too late for them.
She had been stupid.
Why had she listened to her heart?
Just then, she heard a knock at the door.
Hesitant, she opened the door to find a letter on the ground.
She looked around, there was no one to be found.
She opened the letter.
It read:
I loved you yesterday. I will love you tomorrow. I will love you forever if you'll let me.
Tears came to her eyes.
Just then he appeared.
His eyes filling with tears too.
They held one another in a tight embrace.
She had not changed in his eyes, but had remained a constant.
At that moment they both whispered, "I love you."
That night their prayers were answered.
