Joe had barely turned 19
When he signed up for the war
Dressed up in his army greens
As he stood at Georgia\'s door
Georgia held him briefly
As a tear slid down her cheek
She said goodbye to Joe
He\'d be gone by the end of the week
He promised he\'d be right back
When the blessed war was through
And as he turned away he said
\"I\'ll be coming home to you\"
Georgia wrote to Joe everyday
A letter sent with love
And every night a little prayer
Pleading with God above
Now and then a letter would come
From her beloved Joe
Telling her that he was well
And that he loved her so
And with the little parcel
A flower, dried and pressed
A note that Joe had written
I feel so truly blessed\"
And then Georgia smiled
Then one day it came her way
A package tied in blue
All letters she had sent him
With a \'regret to inform you\'
Joe had been missing in action
When we found him lying still
He was courageous to the very end
A young man with iron will
Before he went to be with god
He told us about you
The sparkle in your smile
The dreams in eyes of blue
And then Georgia cried
Georgia grew old beautifully
And with years of grace
Although she had gotten older
She could not forget his face
The face of her beloved Joe
Still waiting there for her
Her age became a number
The years became a blur
And as Georgia closed her eyes
And her heart ceased to beat
Joe came to take her home
Sweeping her off her feet
And then Georgia smiled
