The Mile

by Susanna   May 4, 2006

If I could unravel a mile of love
From the sun to the edge of an untimely death
I’d hide in my silence and watch from above
And leave only footprints to expose my breath

One hope like a razor cuts desperate hate down
The length of the mile reads vacancy here
It happened all hearts died on no true account
And faded as ghosts with far dreams and a tear

An army infected with the deadliest of all
The illness called Love and rightly so named
The only true sickness turns those proud and tall
To but a shard brilliantly shattered and shamed

And few who walk the mile all and around
Avoiding the prick of the angriest thorn
I watched as they walked it painted the ground
And surpassed all those who stood dead and forlorn
