You used to wake me up at dawn, laughing,
and running toward the lights.
I couldn't believe how fast you would go, just to see them.
I would lag behind,
tired and grumpy,
but you didn't care.
You didn't care if I wanted to see them,
but you,
you wanted to see the lights.
I keep thinking back to the shimmer they left on the water,
you always pulled me closer.
I told you not to get too close to the water,
but you wouldn't stop.
I told you,
the lights aren't under the water.
But you wouldn't listen to the nonsense I spoke.
And as you dipped your arm in to touch the light you slipped.
I couldn't catch you,
you screamed for me,
but you were drowning in the water, under the light.
I couldn't grab your hand,
and slowly,
oh so slowly,
you slipped away from me.
The moon still shines every night you are gone,
but I believe now that the light shines for you.
