A Beautiful Day

by Joe Moore   Feb 27, 2004

Deep in the bowels of the warm peach land
where lines of kudzu vines and tall pines stand
you catch a nap under your cap as the weeping willow hangs
and the magnolia blooms a magnificent perfume
while the dogwoods flower the yard like morning dew

the landscape worthy of green thumb envy
as the Mrs. proudly scans the view of her Lillie's
the children play yard games and act so silly
boys in knickers and white socks sporting their shirts of crew
little girls in pink and white dresses ruffles and bows trimmed in blue

the aroma of roast pig mandates your stomach to growl
you see potato salad, green beans, corn on the cob
pecan pie and okra with corn bread cooling on a towel
you try to be quick steal some pie and make a dash
four more right behind you now that pans in the trash

all of daddies brothers already sipping that corn hooch
they slid a little to old lady Washington and now she's getting loose
almost fell over the baby who put barbecue sauce on the pooch
so many laughs, the whole family is here for party
just waiting for he sun to go down for the fun to really get started

we watched and laughed at the time they had everything was grand
times like this are rare and few all of your loved ones at hand
but now it's time for us slaves to clean up quick, quiet and fast
then to my surprise with a gleam in my eye what i saw in the trash can
was a piece of pie that i had to try so i ate it and put back the pan

um um today was a beautiful day.
