ONCE IN A LIFE TIME

by Gail   Aug 1, 2006

Once I heard a girl sing a song
Of happiness. The words were her own.
She was only ten.
She sang of her imprisoned father.
She sang of the time the
Police came and stopped it all.
She sang of the fallen tears that
Were no longer shed.
As she jumped rope, she sang the words
Of happiness. Her Mother was no longer
Swollen and bruised. Her baby
Sister was no longer screaming.
She paused as an ambulance
Screeched by.
The wind caught her hair
As she continued to sing her smile
Back on to her face. She feeling
Thankful the ambulance didn’t want
To take her away again, ended her song.
The dimples in her cheeks
Showing now more than ever.
She waved to her Mom who was
Peeking through their cardboard
Covered window. For her Mother
Could bare to be seen now.
Once in a life time is someone so
Happy with such small standards.
