Slam

Inspiration seeps in
At odd hours
Of the night
But this one's for my sisters
And my brothers.
My mom's name is Cindy.
My name's Natalie
And tonight I'm not going to say
Anything new
All has been said before
But this time
This time
I want you to hear it
No, it isn't me thinking
It's only my hand writing.
It's only my heart bleeding.
It's only my mouth screaming.
It's only my eyes perceiving.
I'm sick of being perceived as less than you.
You are sick of being perceived as less than me.
So lets give it up.
No one is less than anyone here.
No one's label is bigger or shinier than anyone else's. So lets chuck the labels.
It's no longer you and I, or them and us. There are too many bridges now. We cannot pretend that there are walls between us
Anymore.
Lets stop being afraid of one another.
We're letting fear consume us. Instead,
Lets try smiling at our enemy. Lets feel that inevitable peace we'll feel when we say, "I'm sorry.
Let's forget about that."
Every moment we sit here another human dies. Next time it could be you, or me, or him, or her, or them, or us. The last thing you said to him, what if those words were the last to escape your mouth? What you said to her?
What if those were your final words?
Civil wars are raging over the entire planet. Wars of greed about gold or oil. You know what? Triple - quadruple the god damn gas prices and bring my brothers and sisters home! Not one life is worth the price of oil. Democracy is not democracy if we much force feed a country through a naso-gastric tube our ideas or capitalism and freedom.
From the beginning of the US to the August of 1920 - 150 years - women were not citizens. They were property. How can we expect our cowboy waltz to change their society overnight? Or in one election when it took us over a century? And why do we take pride in our accomplishments when right here, our people are not free and equal? How about we send in our troops into Colorado City or just Salt Lake to educate those women about freedom and education? When will we admit that we, as Americans, have a problem? Lets preach about equality when we have it. Okay? Okay.
What is it about skin colour, or type of genitalia that constitutes as walls? What is it about Nationality or someone's love that constitutes as walls? Why do we as humans feel the need to punish others? Why can't we be satisfied with governing ourselves? What are laws doing in my uterus?
What are laws doing in the relationship of two consenting adults? Why can't we leave choice and education out there?
What is it that makes us scared of two adults in love? How can anyone outside of that relationship judge their love? If you believe gay unions are wrong, then don't get married to someone of your same sex. Let everyone make their own mistakes, if you see gay relationships as errors. What about heterosexual relationships where he beats his wife or she beats him? Are we going to ban all marriages because things go wrong? Because people change? And age? And find themselves?
See the injustice? The same people who believe that gays are no entitled to the same rights as everyone else are the same people waltzing around telling other countries to become democracies now. Politics take time. People have to want democracy. There is no such thing as forced democracy.
I challenge everyone to take a walk in another person's shoes. It breaks my heart to thing of meeting the man of my dreams and not being able to marry, or adopt children, or talk to doctors when he is lying on an operating table. Wouldn't that break your heart too?
Or thinking about the fourteen year old girl who lost all trust and love in her father when he raped and impregnated her. Think of her being forced to bare that sickly child and caring for it the rest of her life? Or think of her divorcing her parents and being under dilation and curettage with no one to hold her hand because society has damned her. I thank God everyday that I am not her. And I hope with all my might that she will be able to make the best choice for her.
There is no cure for all of us so lets leave our options open. There may not even be a cure for some of us, but the truest of them all is enlightenment.
Everyone - let's stop this! Let's replace fear with love and destroy our ideals of right and wrong for everyone. Minutes are passing by as we sit waiting for an opportunity to arrive. Lets make that opportunity ourselves. Moments are gliding through time as more and more humans pass away. Lets ponder our words, our hatred and learn that egotism and pride must die if we are going to live together.
Lets go.
