Beneath the skin

by fair weather   Sep 20, 2006

I drift

Too often

Through the wilderness

Of my imagination

I think it is clear

Only for a moment

I can not fool myself

Thinking the heart is there

But it is deep

Beneath the skin and blood and bones

What a great diguise

The color

The warnth

I can even feel a pulse

But eyes are windows

And I can see the blinds are shut

Only the flesh is exposed

It is only the flesh they hunger for

It is all we have in common

The mind twists

Our knowledge

Just enough to forget

For one moment

That the heart is buried

So deep

That we may never know

What is beneath the skin
