Final Goodbye

by muffinhead   Oct 9, 2006

The whole week before you went away
We spent all our time packing your bags
Tucking mementos into your suitcase
Movies, toys, stickers, flags

I was afraid to walk around the house
I was afraid to run into you both
Standing alone, crying quiet as a mouse
I made to myself a silent oath
You wouldn't catch me crying

On the night of the day that was your last
We three lay on your bed
Talking about days gone past
You made us laugh, but inside, I felt dead

Every now and then one of us would stop
We\\\'d be silent, tears streaming down our face
You\\\'d lift us up, up we\\\'d be propped
You are our only saving grace

Then we took you to the waiting car
After you said a final farewell
To your 2 year old and your 5 year old
I was shaking, throat tight, eyes welled
I kept my distance, felt so cold

Put your bags in the car, turned to hug me
And then I couldn\\\'t help but cry
I held on to you with all my might
And then we said our final goodbye

//Dedicated to my Daddy, who\\\'s in Iraq for a year.\\\\\\\\
