A Ghost's Love

by Truest Lies   Nov 11, 2006

There stands a ghost waiting,
At the threshold of Heaven's Door,
Waiting to hear the news,
Of what waits in store.

He was a good person,
In his short life,
Never drank or smoke,
Or stole any one else's wife.

Now he waits,
For the Door to open,
To receive what he is certain is due,
For this is the end.

An angel appears,
And shakes its head,
It's eyes fill up with tears,
As his heart fill up with dread.

"My friend there has been a mistake,
Your time has not yet come,"
Says the angel with a sad smile,
And then with a wave sends him on.

As he passes out,
Dragging his tired feet,
He glimpses in at Hell,
And sees a demon on a blood-soaked seat.

"Come and join me, then"
Says the devil with a smile,
"I'll keep you here,
So that you can rest for a while."

There is a cry from down below,
And the ghost looks down,
Through the clouds he glimpses,
A human making a silent sound.
The devil frowns and shudders, says
"Love is a strange thing," and turns back to breaking souls.

"What do you mean?"
Asks the ghost,
And the demon answers with a sneer
"Someone down there loves you,
Screaming that you return,
That is love for you,
People never learn.
You could have a time here,
In my beautiful Purgatory,
and yet I already know,
The choice that you will make.
You will choose love, will you not?"

The ghost nodded,
A simple gesture.
If love was his,
But for a day,
He'd jump for it,
And hold it,
To never let it go, nay.
For love is a precious thing,
Once found it should be cherished.

Down below on earth,
The boy took a breath,
Coughing and choking,
As the ghost slid back inside.
He was no longer dead,
Even though he had just died.

The stricken girl craddled him,
Her heart sick with relief,
For love is a precious thing.
Once found it should be clung to.

"What happened," she whispered,
As she held him near.
"I went to Heaven" he answered,
And wiped from her cheek a tear.

"Why did you not stay?"
She asked, bewildered.
"Did the angels let you go?"

"No, they didn't even let me in,"
And with a wink he said,
"It seemed there was a heart left on earth,
That I still had to win."

With that he kissed her,
And perhaps even the devil smiled.
For the girl had been waiting a long time,
For the boy to come to his senses.
