Katie

He sat by her bedside
every day
where she lay
wasting away

He gazed at her
with hope and denial
her dying eyes
would try to smile

The third person there
would never be born
their very first baby
never knew they mourned

Her young, sweet face
only thirty years old
stopped smiling one morning
grew still and cold

I should have tried harder
said a few more prayers
I just forgot about her
But I really did care

Sometimes I wonder-
Will he marry again?
Or will he bring her with him
to the very end?

They say she had the sickness
named after the crab
but all I see is death
written on the stone slab

Her era has ended
like a leaf blown by wind
so easy and quick
a life can end

Goodbye, Katie.
