Mother's Backbone

by T Michelle Smith   Mar 26, 2004

The ones you love
Hold so near
For your moments with them
Are treasured and dear

You hope and pray
With all of your might
Together as family
You can conquer this fight

For the love in this family
Is special, it’s true
Which originated with
Your mother’s love for you

For she’s been so strong
Throughout all of these years
She’s been your backbone
To help face your fears

Even as sickness may
make some folks sad
It’s her families unconditional love
And support that she’s glad

As she faces a crisis
She won’t face it alone
For now her family
Will become her backbone.

This is the first meaningful poem that I have ever written. My very close friends mother was diagnosed with cancer and her 7 children, all adult now, are struggling to cope with this situation. She is the backbone of the family and keeps everyone together. I have never seen a more loving and caring family that is there for one another the way that they are. I know that she is the reason for this. Normally large families tend to have rivalry and major falling outs but they have stuck together through many adventures. I would really like to know what you think. Please comment and vote.
