A Hero's Tale

by Guy and Shar   Jan 30, 2007

A plane passed above me
On my way home from work
It didn't really bother me
I didn't think of the worse

I whistled a tune
I had a smile on my face
My wife gave birth last night
It was such a great day

I then heard a scream
As I reached for the door
A plane hit the north tower
Of one hundred and ten floors

I went to work and got ready
It was the usual routine
The crash wasn't odd at all
It was an accident, it seemed

The sight was horrendous
The plane hit so high
People jumped to their deaths
Are the rest still alive?

We fought against the fire
My men headed in
There was still hope
Then the second plane hit

We fought this evil harder
As the flames from hell increased
We ignored the growing thought
That they're already deceased

"We need to get in, boys!"
I yelled to my team
"We need to get them out!
This isn't some dream!"

We made our way in
The ground began to shake
"Oh crap!" I hear on my radio
"The South tower's beginning to break!

You must get out now
Before it's too late!
The North tower might collapse, too!
This isn't your fate!"

I ignored all the pleas
From the men down below
My men and I kept going forward
As the fire continued to grow

We found many still inside
Too scared to even cry
"Get them out!" I told my men
"I will not let them die!"

I went up higher
To search for survivors
My men got them out safe
But I was left in the tower

"Captain, get out!
We've done all that we could!"
Before I could respond
The ground, once again, shook

My wife came to mind
I had tears in my eyes
I won't see my new baby
I was going to die

"I'm sorry, Lieutenant,"
I said on the phone
"Tell my wife that I love her
And that I had to go.
That I'm sorry I didn't make it
To greet the bundle of joy
I was working up late
But I still thought of my new boy
Tell the guys that I love them
They did a really good job
I wouldn't trade them for the world
Especially you, Bob."

I said my last good-bye
And accepted my fate
I died to save others
Who would remember this day
