The Letter That Never Came

She waits for the letter
The one that never came
The one addressed to her
From the man who gave his name

He said he sent it a year earlier
Before he went away
The letter has yet to come
Even after today

Still she waits patiently
Day after long day
For the letter her husband sent
Before he went away

Weeks rolls by with speed
4 months, then a year
He told her the letter had important news
And it never arriving is her fear

Years go by in a flash
And her husband never comes home
She's forgotten all about the letter
And she's realized she's all alone

But then one day while walking back home
She sees something in the mail
It's the very letter her husband wrote
The first line "Dear my sweet Abigail"

"These times are hard
And with me going away, it's rough
But you must remember to stay strong
I know you're tough

I'm sorry, my love, but I must leave you
For you deserve much better than me
I have lied and cheated so many times
But you were too in love to see

I apologize again for leaving you
But I must never come back
Because my poor heart is empty
And it's somehow turned to black

Say goodbye to your family
And tell the kids I love them so
I want to stay but I cannot
I'm sorry, my love, I must go"

The letter was signed with his signature
and a P.S. in handwriting the same
"of all the women, I loved you most"
the letter she wished never came
